Modular Cube
The origami modular cube (Sonobe cube) is a classic introduction to modular origami. Six identical units interlock without glue to form a perfect cube. Each unit is simple to fold, and the assembly process teaches spatial reasoning. Use six different colors for a stunning rainbow cube.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Fold 6 identical square sheets. For each unit: fold the square in half and unfold. Fold both edges to the center crease.
- 2
Fold the top-right and bottom-left corners to the center crease to form triangular flaps.
- 3
Fold the triangular flaps over the edges and tuck them behind the center strip.
- 4
Fold the top-left corner down and the bottom-right corner up along the edge of the tucked flaps. You now have a parallelogram with pockets and tabs.
- 5
Repeat to make 6 identical units. Each unit has two triangular tabs and two triangular pockets.
- 6
Assemble by inserting one unit's tab into another unit's pocket. Connect three units around a single corner.
- 7
Continue connecting the remaining units, ensuring each corner of the cube has exactly three units meeting.
- 8
Tuck the final tabs in carefully. The cube should hold together tightly without glue.
